By Margie Anne Clark

Hollywood, Calif. - Louis Prima must have been smiling in heaven as his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled Sunday, on what would have been the iconic King of Swing’s 100th birthday.

Set amidst the backdrop of the Ricardo Montalban Theater on Hollywood and Vine, the unabashed spirit of Prima shook the pavement as the late jazz singer’s son, Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses and the lovely Sarah Speigel dazzled the crowd with such familiar ballads as "I Ain’t Got Nobody," "Buona Sera, Zooma-Zooma," "Jump,Jive And Wail." Prima's children, Louis Prima Jr. and Leena Prima accepted the Star on behalf of their legendary father.

The late Prima's Centennial event coincided with he Day-Long "Walk the Walk" Community Festival in Hollywood Honoring the Walk Of Fame’s 50th Anniversary
And Celebrates What Would

Louis Prima remains one of the greatest contributors to popular music and a powerful entertainment influence during the past eight decades. A new era of music began when Louis left his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana and launched his recording career in 1933 in Chicago with upbeat renditions of Dinah and Chinatown. He defined the early Swing Era in New York and Hollywood with his New Orleans Gang and had an incredible output of recordings and appearances in films and on stage between 1934-39.
The Prima recordings of It’s The Rhythm In Me, Lazy River, and his own immortal composition Sing, Sing, Sing (also a Benny Goodman hit) had legions of fans swing dancing from The Famous Door on 52nd Street in New York to the hottest spots in Hollywood. The swing trend escalated and grew thanks to Prima’s driving force. His music skyrocketed in popularity, eventually surpassing the sales of the number one band at the time, Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. Louis and his twenty-two piece orchestra scored a tremendous hit in 1944 with a million-seller entitled Angelina. He topped the charts throughout the Big Band Era with Majestic, Hit, RCA, and Robin Hood label recordings of Robin Hood, I’ll Walk Alone, Josephina, Please No Squeeza Da Banana, Baciagaloop, Felicia No Capicia, Civilization, Oh Babe, and many others. Louis made entertainment history during this time, breaking all house attendance records wherever he performed across the nation.
Louis composed A Sunday Kind of Love in 1946, and the song became a hit during four decades and six different musical genres including Swing, Doo-Wop, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, and Country! The song would appear on the charts for many other prominent artists who also recorded this Prima standard.

Louis Prima was one of the founding fathers of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. He downsized his big band in 1954, and created a small group that he named The Witnesses. Prima’s shuffle beat, combined with New Orleans Jazz, was a predecessor to what became the Rock & Roll sound of the 1950s. The string of hits on Capitol Records that followed included Just a Gigolo,/I Ain't Got Nobody, Buona Sera, Zooma-Zooma, Jump,Jive, And Wail, When You're Smiling, and many others. Louis was also awarded the first Grammy award in the Vocal Group category for his knockout rendition of That Old Black Magic with Keely Smith and Sam Butera & The Witnesses in 1958.
In 1963, he fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams: Prima Magnagroove Records, his own recording studio and record company. He would record for his Prima Label from 1963 through 1975. During his five decade career, Louis Prima recorded almost one thousand individual recordings released on 26 different labels. Louis provided the voice of King Louie in the award-winning Disney production of The Jungle Book in 1966.The film was nominated for an Oscar, and Louis received a gold album for the soundtrack recording.
Louis Prima continued to break attendance records at The Sahara Hotel, The Sands Hotel, The Hilton and Tropicana Hotels in Las Vegas, Harrah's Reno and Lake Tahoe, The Copacabana in New York, and prominent venues throughout the country during the 1960s and 1970s. He also appeared constantly on every mainstream television show including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, The Joey Bishop Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dean Martin Show, The David Frost Show, and many others. His final musical projects were uncompleted score and dialogue sessions for the Disney film The Rescuers. The diagnosis of a benign brain tumor in late 1975 promptly halted his very active recording and performance schedules. The surgery that followed would send Louis into a semi-comatose state until his death in 1978.
His legend and music live on in full force. Louis’ award winning composition Sing, Sing, Sing was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1982. ASCAP posthumously awarded Louis their prestigious Songwriter’s Award for A Sunday Kind Of Love in 1989. Artists as diverse as David Lee Roth, Reba McEntire and Brian Setzer would bring Prima’s music to the top of the charts in the 80s and 90s.In 1998 The Gap stores brought Louis to the attention of a new generation with their television commercial featuring a song that Louis wrote and recorded entitled Jump, Jive an’ Wail. Popular modern performers such as Jessica Simpson, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Royal Crown Revue and many others have constantly covered Louis’ music. His ground-breaking Capitol album, The Wildest, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The Louis Prima Capitol Collectors Series compilation CD was certified gold by the RIAA and his Live From Las Vegas CD landed on the Billboard Top Jazz Album chart in 2005.

The Louis Prima Centennial Celebration is underway throughout the year of 2010 for the millions of Prima fans at special events spanning the globe, on radio stations around the world, and online. This landmark year also brings several special honors recognizing Louis Prima for his many entertainment contributions along with his music featured in the 2010 Olympics, in several major motion pictures, television shows, commercials and video games!

World of Color’ Goes Online and On Tour - July 6, 2010

Iconic Locations in California Cities Will be Transformed Using Digital Projections and Favorite Disney and Disney•Pixar Stories. Viewers Invited to Watch and Participate Online

ANAHEIM, Calif. (July 1 , 2010) – Viewers around the world will join a one-of-a-kind, online phenomenon in July to experience the extraordinary magic of “World of Color,” the new after-dark spectacular presented nightly in Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim. The interactive tour will feature live shows in four California cities, and the online audience will travel “virtually” to each location to watch the shows and interact with the webcast.

In each city, specially produced animation will be projected onto a familiar city landmark, using a sensational mixture of special effects, high-tech projections and one of the storytelling themes presented in “World of Color.”

The public is invited to participate online only at the “World of Color” Road Show website (www.worldofcolorroadshow.com), where viewers will enjoy a rich experience that includes Disney animation and music, video entertainment and a “viewer’s choice” opportunity to vote for the starring color in that evening’s show. Each city will have a broadcast location designed for media only.

This “online spectacular” is inspired by the dazzling “World of Color” show, which combines music, animation, water and a multitude of special effects in a magical celebration of Disney characters and storytelling. A new venture for the Disneyland Resort, the tour will utilize streaming online video to bring its own special magic to the World Wide Web and to iconic locations in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles. Each locale will deliver a different, amazing show.

ONLINE EXPERIENCE: Viewers will be able to access the webcast performances live and on encore nights at the website, in English at www.WorldofColorRoadShow.com and in Spanish at www.coloresdisney.com. The site also features an artistic video mashup, interviews with the creators of “World of Color” and the voting option. Video clips from each iconic location will be added to the show on ensuing nights, inspiring viewers to follow the virtual tour throughout California.

CAST YOUR VOTE: Just as fairies cast their spells, online viewers will cast their votes each night for one of three colors representing each of the Three Good Fairies from “Sleeping Beauty” – Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. The color with the most votes will be featured in the show’s opening moment, complete with a trail of pixie dust. In true Disney style, the winning fairy will fly from computer screens to the landmark location and she will conjure the magical transformation of the landmark using the chosen color – red, green or blue. With this bit of magic, online audience members are able to lend their own spark of inspiration to the show.

SHOW THEMES: A different theme will come alive in each of the four cities, with each show reflecting a theme from the“World of Color” production at Disney California Adventure. To experience the show in each city, people will have to visit the website. There will be no accommodations on site in each city.

SAN FRANCISCO: In San Francisco, the unique animation will be projected onto the façade of a landmark that will be revealed online on Opening Night. The presentation is dedicated to the theme of “Love,” featuring romantic couples from Disney and Disney•Pixar animated films. The live show, presented Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 and 8, will repeat continuously from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Pacific time and will be shot from several different angles for the ongoing, live webcast. Encore webcasts (not live) of the San Francisco show will appear online from 9 to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 9-11.

SACRAMENTO: With forest and garden scenes from such films as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pocahontas,” “Bambi” and “Alice in Wonderland,” the online experience in Sacramento will be built around the theme of “Nature.” Presented Thursday through Sunday, July 15-18, in historic Old Sacramento, it will be webcast live from 9 to 11:30 p.m. each evening.

SAN DIEGO: The next stop will be San Diego where, appropriately enough, “Water” will be the theme of the interactive experience, featuring scenes from “The Little Mermaid,” “Finding Nemo” and others projected onto the U.S.S. Midway Museum at Navy Pier. The San Diego webcasts will be live from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, July 22-25.

LOS ANGELES: The final shows of the online tour will be projected onto the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles Thursday and Friday, July 29 and 30. The theme will be “Sky,” illustrated by scenes from such films as “Aladdin” and “Fantasia.” As before, the live online presentation will be repeated continuously from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Encore performances (not live) will be webcast from 9 to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and Aug. 1.

About Disneyland Resort: The Disneyland Resort features two theme parks – Disneyland (the original Disney theme park) and Disney California Adventure park – plus the Downtown Disney District comprised of unique dining, entertainment and shopping experiences. Rush Receives Walk of Fame Star - June 28, 2010

By Steven Herbert
City News Service

HOLLYWOOD (CNS) - The Canadian progressive rock trio Rush received the 2,412th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Saturday, drawing praise for their values and loyalty.
``I've been in the rock 'n' roll business for about 20 years now and let me tell you -- these guys are the best of the best,'' said Billy Corgan, the vocalist and lead guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins said in the late-morning ceremony in front of the Musicians Institute on Hollywood Boulevard.
``They represent the value that the fan will listen and will care, that you're not just a bunch of sheep out there, that you actually give a (obscenity) about what's going on.''
Donna Halper, a former music director and radio personality at WMMS-FM (100.7) in Cleveland, the first disc jockey to play Rush's music, said ``for nearly four decades, the members of Rush have remained true to themselves and true to their music.
``They've never allowed success to spoil them,'' Halper said. ``They've never lost their integrity. In a world where it often seems the good guys never win, Rush are living proof that sometimes good people do finish first.''
Halper told of a man in Japan who learned English ``so he could better appreciate the words of Rush songs,'' along with similar stories from fans in Chile, Brazil, Finland, Israel and Mexico.
Geddy Lee, the group's bassist and frontman, said ``there are some times in life where you have what I would call a beautiful, surreal moment. This is one of those moments.''
Guitarist Alex Lifeson told the fans, who lined up on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard, ``we wouldn't be able to do what we do without you. It's really special to us.''
The group's third member, drummer Neal Peart, did not attend the ceremony, as he was riding his motorcycle Albuquerque, N.M., where Rush will begin its 37-city Time Machine tour Tuesday.
Rush drew what Leron Gubler, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's president and chief executive officer who presided over the ceremony, called ``one of the most enthusiastic crowds we've had in a very long time.''
The ceremony came four days before both the start of its tour, which includes stops at the Forum in Inglewood Aug. 11 and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine two days later, and the DVD release of the documentary ``Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.''
Beginning with its self-titled debut album in 1974, Rush has sold more than 40 million records worldwide. Only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones have more consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band, according to Recording Industry Association of America figures.
Rush's most-acclaimed albums include ``2112,'' ``Moving Pictures,'' and ``Test of Echo.'' Some of its most popular songs include ``The Spirit of Radio,'' ``Tom
Sawyer,'' ``Limelight,'' ``Closer to the Heart,'' ``YYZ,'' ``Working Man'' and ``Subdivisions.''
Rush is considered Canada's most successful rock band. It was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994, Canada's Walk of Stars in 1999 and Canada's Songwriting Hall of Fame in March and was bestowed the Order of Canada in 1997.

Hollywood Honor Coincides With Tour, *Documentary and New Single

6752 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Musician’s Institute
Friday, June 25, 2010.

Rush – is without question one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, equally famed for both its virtuoso musicianship and provocative songwriting.

The honor comes as the progressive-rock trio comprised of bassist-frontman Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart gear up for their North American Time Machine tour and pre-releasing 2 new songs “Caravan” & “BU2B” from their forthcoming 20th studio album Clockwork Angels (due spring 2011)

Just last year, a career-chronicling Rolling Stone feature praised the band for its continuing artistic vitality, noting that “It’s true that Rush doesn’t mean today what it did in ’76 or even ’96. It may mean more.”

Rush's enduring pop culture relevance is perhaps best evidenced by a pair of high- profile appearances - a rare national television performance and interview on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" in 2008 (the band's first TV appearance since 1975), and a pivotal role in the storyline of the 2009 hit comedy, I Love You, Man, starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segal, where the band also made a memorable cameo in the film.

Beginning with their self-titled debut album in 1974, their extraordinary body of work – which includes such formidable works as 1976’s 2112, 1981’s Moving Pictures, 1996’s Test for Echo and the latest studio album “Snakes & Arrows”- made a triumphant debut on the Billboard 200 upon its initial release in 2007, entering the chart in the #3 spot. The album’s success marked Rush’s highest chart debut since 1993, as well as the group’s eleventh Top Ten album in the U.S.

Rush has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and garnered untold legions of devoted and admiring fans. According to the RIAA, Rush's sales statistics place RUSH third behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band. Some of their most popular songs include: The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Closer To The Heart, YYZ, Working Man and Subdivisons.

Rush has also won a number of Juno Awards, been nominated for multiple Grammy awards, was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994, bestowed the Order of Canada in 1997, inducted into Canada’s Walk of Stars in 1999 and Canada’s Songwriting Hall of Fame in March of 2010. Consistently celebrated and respected worldwide, Rush is the most successful Canadian rock band of all time, and they remain one of the biggest grossing arena rock bands ever.

Rush has become known for the instrumental skills of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental concerns.

A special limited engagement big screen release of the documentary "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage," opened worldwide on June 10. Directors Sam Dunn with Scot McFadyen's rock doc, which follows the band's 40-plus-years career, premiered this past April at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival where it won the coveted Audience Award. The documentary includes interviews with some of today’s most respected rock artists such as Billy Corgan, Taylor Hawkins, Trent Reznor, Sebastian Bach, Kirk Hammett and Gene Simmons speaking about the influence of Rush. The doc is slated for release on DVD and Blu-Ray in the U.S. on June 29. *On the day of the ceremony there will be a special screening of the documentary at Mann Chinese 6 in Hollywood, just 2 blocks west of where the band will get their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The film will be featured on Friday June 25 as an all day event. The film will play at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. This is a last chance to see it on the big screen Event tied in to celebrate the band's honor of receiving the Star.

Four days after receiving the Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Rush will kick-off its "Time Machine Tour" on June 29, in Albuquerque, New Mexico and finish October 2, in West Palm Beach, Florida. www.rush.com

Wonderful 'World of Color' Dazzles Crowd with Summertime World Premiere at Disneyland California Adventures - June 16, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. - With a splash of fireworks, dazzling water-based special effects and a celebrity red carpet (actually a water-inspired blue carpet), the nighttime spectacular “World of Color” made its exciting world premiere Thursday before an audience filled with celebrities and VIPs at Paradise Bay in Disney California Adventure park.

This new dimension of Disney storytelling, brimming with water, color, music and animation, opens to guests at Disney California Adventure Friday, June 11.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Robert A. Iger, president and chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company, joined Thomas O. Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, and Mickey Mouse to welcome the special VIP premiere guests.

“‘World of Color’ is a testament to the creativity, passion, innovation and talent of people throughout our organization,” Iger said. “The combination of water, light, fire, and music makes ‘World of Color’ a truly magical event that showcases beloved Disney characters in an entirely new way.”

Added Staggs: “‘World of Color’ transforms the landscape of the Disneyland Resort and marks a major milestone in the expansion of Disney California Adventure. It’s a spectacular show that is distinctly Disney, and unlike any attraction we’ve created before. It will captivate our guests with an end-of-day experience that is exhilarating, emotional and highly memorable. We are excited to debut this great, new experience for our guests and extremely proud of the talented team that drove its creation.”

There has never been a show like “World of Color,” the mega-scale, after-dark celebration of Disney storytelling. “World of Color” brings animation to life with powerful fountains that become stars of the show as they create one of the world’s largest projected water screens. In just under 25 minutes, “World of Color” immerses audiences in technological wonder and the enchanting magic of beloved Disney and Disney•Pixar characters, combining nearly 1,200 versatile fountains, dazzling colors, Disney music and an all-new kaleidoscope of audio and visual effects, taking water-based entertainment to a new level of artistry.

The inspiration for the show came from Walt Disney himself and “World of Color” features characters and images that span the history of Disney and Disney•Pixar moviemaking.

“Our entire team – from every corner of the Walt Disney Company – is thrilled to finally share ‘World of Color’ with our guests,” said Steve Davison, show director and vice president, parades and spectaculars, for Walt Disney Imagineering. “It’s very exciting to take audiences on an emotional journey as they experience laughter, drama and beauty in this breathtaking extravaganza.”

Disney cast members and crews built nearly an acre of superstructure to support the complex production. Walt Disney Imagineering and Creative Entertainment installed the massive infrastructure and revolutionary technology that created the stage for “World of Color.” On this stage, the team directs a unique variety of water effects, larger-than-life projections, lasers, fog, flames, surround sound and stunning images.

The sweeping story and stunning effects are created with:

* Nearly 1,200 powerful and programmable fountains with heights ranging from 30 feet to 200 feet (50 feet higher than Mickey’s Fun Wheel). Each fountain has multiple points of control to direct the lighting, color intensity, water angle and height.
* One of the world’s largest projected water screens – a wall of water 380 feet wide by 50 feet high, for a projection surface of 19,000 square feet.
* Nearly 30 high-definition projectors – 14 of them submersible.
* Synchronized flame projections, lasers and special effects that will flood the senses.
* A soundtrack performed by more than 100 musicians.

“World of Color” has been some five years in the making, beginning with brainstorming by show director Davison and his creative crew. As the concept grew, the Disney team sought out new technologies and multi-media to support a visionin which water and light could dance, change character and move the audience, becoming, in effect, the “stars” of the show.

Helping to tie it all together is a musical score that combines both familiar and new melodies and introduces a newly arranged version of the 1960s television theme for “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color,” originally composed by Richard B. and Robert M. Sherman, the Oscar-winning composers of “Mary Poppins” and “It’s a Small World.” The “World of Color” score was composed by Mark Hammond, and orchestrated and conducted by David Hamilton, both celebrated music industry professionals.

SCV Youth Project bowling over in support of youth - March 10, 2009

Santa Clarita, Calif. - Santa Clarita City Council Members Bob Kellar and Laurie Ender, will join the SCV Youth Project in hosting the 4 th Annual Bowling For Youts' Charity Event on April 19, at Valencia Lanes in Newhall starting at 1 p.m.

"There is so much need for our free on-campus services for youth given the current economy," said John Musella, president of the board of directors for the SCV Youth Project. "Our annual family fun bowling event brings our community together to support youth in our valley. I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend afternoon then having fun bowling with family and friends, all while helping local youth!"

The SCV Youth Project provides free on-campus support services. The Youth Project's peer mentors work with students at local high school and junior high campuses, providing case management and facilitating support groups to help teens deal with serious life issues such as teen pregnancy, grief/loss, alcohol and drug abuse, male/female issues, conflict resolution, anger management, goal setting, relationships, life skills, job skills, etc.

"The need for an agency such as the Youth Project is beyond measure," said Kim Goldman, SCV Youth Project executive director when asked why it is so important to have a program such as this one. "We all know how hard it is to be a teenager these days. We provide a safe place for kids to share their feelings and learn life skills to help them make better, smarter decisions as they become adults. We owe it to our youth to be readily available as possible."

Council Members Kellar and Ender will emcee the fun-filled day, and join community leaders from Poole & Shaffery, California United Bank, Rituals Colour Salon, The Wildcat Group, Farmers Insurance, Infinity Wealth Management, Newhall Land, Fashion Frolic, Whitestar USA, Tom Hough CPA and many other corporate sponsors and local families.

The SCV Youth Project was founded in 2000 and has reached more than 20,000 kids through peer mentoring, support groups, crisis intervention and outreach.

The race from Santa Clarita to Pasadena proved to be a difficult one during the final stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California, and this year will be no different. The first 25 miles of Stage 7, sponsored by Herbalife, includes a gradual climb from Santa Clarita, through Acton, to the intersection of Angeles Forest Road. The route continues uphill, showcasing the beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains, to the second highest elevation ever reached by the Amgen Tour of California on the towering Millcreek Summit (4,906 ft.). Descending with a 15-mile run to Angeles Crest Highway, the route begins a fast plunge to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. After more than 65 miles from Santa Clarita to Pasadena, with the mountains and the Rose Bowl serving as the backdrop, the peloton will complete the stage with five, five-mile laps on a very demanding circuit through the area surrounding the Rose Bowl. This course will provide a challenging, action-packed day leading up to the finale on Sunday.

SPRINTER MARK CAVENDISH Wins Epic Stage 4 OF AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA AND LEVI LEIPHEIMER RETAINS OVERALL LEAD FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE DAY- - February 19, 2009

CLOVIS - Considered by many as the world’s fastest cyclist, Mark Cavendish (GBR) of Team Columbia-Highroad sprinted to an impressive win in Stage 4 of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Two-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer (USA) of Astana was able to retain the overall lead and will wear the Amgen Leader Jersey heading into Stage 5 of the race. The impressive and challenging Stage 4 course, which took the riders from Merced to Clovis, included five King of the Mountain (KOM) and two sprint competitions.

After a fast and furious start to the race, which began with immediate attacks, Cavendish celebrated a narrow victory over Tom Boonen (BEL) of Quick Step.

“This win was massive for me and for the team,” said Cavendish. “I was really driven and I wanted this win bad. The team stayed so well together on every climb and it played into our ends today.”

Though the 115.8-mile stage saw no major changes in the overall general classification, the field faced multiple challenging aspects, including the five categorized climbs between the morning start in Merced and the final flat run-in to the finish line in Clovis.

The majestic views of the field flying along with the snow-capped Sierra Mountains in the backdrop amidst brilliant blue skies and sun made for a perfect day of racing.

“The scenery on the course is awesome,” said Leipheimer. “It’s very pretty and there were a ton of people, even in the snow, cheering for us. I think it’s great that the Amgen Tour of California can come to new places and spread the word.”

Jason McCartney (USA) of Saxo Bank drove several early moves, finally getting clear at the 26-mile mark with Serge Pauwels (BEL) of Cervelo Test Team and Rock Racing's Tyler Hamilton (USA). Hamilton's teammate Francisco Mancebo (ESP) joined the break as well, hoping to defend his sprint and KOM jerseys.

The first dry day of the race was marred by serious injuries to three high-profile riders: Kim Kirchen (LUX) of Team Columbia-Highroad fractured his right clavicle and scapula; Oscar Friere (ESP) of Rabobank fractured two ribs on his left side; and Scott Nydam (USA) of the BMC Racing Team fractured his left clavicle.

As the peloton continued their charge, Cavendish’s confidence grew. Mancebo stayed up front long enough to consolidate his leads, then retreated to the field to give teammate Hamilton a shot at staying away. The lead quickly climbed to more than five minutes with 50 miles to go, but with the mountains and motivated sprinters behind, the breakaway had no chance. They were finally swallowed by the fast-moving peloton at the Clovis city limits, where the Cervelo Test Team pulled to the front. But, Team Columbia-Highroad’s infamous sprinter Cavendish quickly took over for the win.

"I was looking after so well after the climbs; my team really put me in a perfect position,” said Cavendish. “Mark Renshaw (Team Columbia-Highroad) helped me; it was the first time we got the lead-out right."

In what was a photo-finish bunch sprint to the “gateway to the sierras,” Boonen took second and Juan Jose (J.J.) Haedo (ARG) of Saxo Bank took third.

The only change in the jerseys is to Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer™ Most Courageous Rider Jersey, which was awarded to Hamilton. The other jersey winners remain unchanged with Leipheimer in the Amgen Leader Jersey, Robert Gesink (NED) of Rabobank in the Rabobank Best Young Rider Jersey and Mancebo in the Herbalife Sprint Jersey. Mancebo also retains the California Travel & Tourism Commission King of the Mountain (KOM) Jersey, but McCartney, who is second in the KOM competition overall, will wear the jersey tomorrow, since Mancebo will be wearing the Herbalife Sprint Jersey.

“When we were planning for the inaugural race in 2004, our vision was to become the greatest race,” said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports. “One that was important to cyclists and teams and important on the global cycling calendar, and I think we are making progress. It has been a difficult race so far, but the crowds have been fantastic, we are broadcasting in more than 200 countries, we are on live television, reaching more than 200 million households.”

“Amgen has delivered on the promise of biotechnology by discovering and developing innovative and vital medicines that have helped millions of patients fight cancer, kidney disease and other serious illnesses,” said Stuart Arbuckle, vice president and general manager of Oncology Business Unit, Amgen. “Through the Amgen Tour of California sponsorship, we are able to raise awareness of the medical breakthroughs possible through biotechnology while also helping support cancer patients and caregivers through the Breakaway from Cancer™ initiative.”

Amgen created the national Breakaway from Cancer initiative in 2005 as a complementary component to its sponsorship of the inaugural Amgen Tour of California. The Breakaway from Cancer initiative is designed to empower patients by connecting them to education, resources and hope.

Amgen invited local cancer survivors to participate in start activities in Merced, and in Clovis cancer survivor Lisa Burnett had the honor of awarding Hamilton Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer Most Courageous Rider jersey.

Levi Leipheimer takes overall lead after Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California: Cyclists Cross Golden Gate Bridge On Route from Sausalito to Santa Cruz - February 17, 2009

SANTA CRUZ –The second stage of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California brought excitement to the finish in Santa Cruz, as two-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer (USA) of Astana was propelled to take second in the stage and also a 24-second overall lead.

Fellow American Thomas Peterson of Garmin-Slipstream, best young rider overall in the 2006 Amgen Tour of California, sprinted to the finish to take the stage victory. Stage 2, which took cyclists from Sausalito to Santa Cruz, a new city for the race, finished in front of record crowds.

“I had it in my head that I was going to try to win today,” said Leipheimer. “I looked around and saw that people were at their limit, but I felt really strong and inspired at that moment, so I went for it.”

After an enthusiastic start in Sausalito, Stage 2 began by taking the riders over one of the most iconic structures in the country, the Golden Gate Bridge. Despite, or perhaps because of, the weather conditions, an early breakaway of 10 riders was established less than 10 miles from the start, which included Santa Cruz native Ben Jacques-Maynes (USA) of BISSELL Pro Cycling.

Riding in support of race leader Francisco Mancebo (ESP), who took Stage 1 yesterday after a truly epic and heroic 100-mile breakaway, Rock Racing kept a steady tempo at the front of the peloton; the gap fluctuated but never exceeded five minutes.

The first King of the Mountains (KOM) climb of the day came at 46.7 miles on Tunitas Creek Road, a category 2 climb of just over six miles that rises 1,562 feet. Carlos Barredo (ESP) of Quick Step set the tempo of the break on this climb, as they rode past the giant Redwood trees lining the street.

At about 95 miles into the race Barredo jumped ahead of the breakaway, but was soon caught and passed by Peterson and Jason McCartney (USA) of Saxo Bank. At the same time, Leipheimer pulled away from the peloton to launch a solo attack on the breakaway group.

The second KOM of the day on Bonny Doon Road (category 3) came at the 102.6-mile mark. It was at this point that the breakaway splintered for good and Leipheimer really sprang clear from the chasing field. The Santa Rosa native quickly caught, passed and dropped all but Peterson, keeping the pressure on to gain maximum time before the Santa Cruz finish.

“The crowds today and yesterday, in my hometown of Santa Rosa, were amazing,” added Leipheimer. “The conditions out there were bad, yet you still see thousands of die-hard fans just cheering us on; that definitely motivates us. We really appreciate the support of the fans, and this race is obviously doing really well.”

Though none of the other cyclists were able to close the gap on the sprint to the finish, there are still 16 riders within a minute of the overall lead, making the upcoming days of the race even more exciting and competitive.

The rainy weather claimed a few victims of mechanicals and flat tires in the first half of the race, including a flat tire for Leipheimer about 25 miles into the race and a 15-rider crash, which included Lance Armstrong (USA) of Astana and Andy Jacques-Maynes (USA) of BISSELL Pro Cycling Team. All of the riders recovered from the crash, with the exception of Jacques-Maynes, who had to drop out of the race to seek medical attention.

After a long, hard day of racing, Leipheimer claimed the Amgen Leader Jersey. Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer™ Most Courageous Rider Jersey was awarded to local resident Ben Jacques-Maynes, to recognize his strong performance in the breakaway. Mancebo retained the Herbalife Sprint Jersey and the California Travel & Tourism Commission King of the Mountain (KOM) Jersey. Robert Gesink (NED) of Rabobank held onto the Rabobank Best Young Rider Jersey.

The top-three general classification leaders after today are Leipheimer in first, Michael Rogers (AUS) of Team Columbia-High Road in second and David Zabriskie (USA) of Garmin-Slipstream in third.

“Beginning with our first-ever ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, and ending for the first time in Santa Cruz, this was certainly a great showcase for two iconic locations in the state of California,” said Andrew Messick, president, AEG Sports. “But what also made this an historic day for the Amgen Tour of California was the great finish by two-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer, who rode through adverse conditions to reclaim the Amgen Leader jersey, which he continues to insist belongs to him this time of year.”

“For nearly 30 years, Amgen has tapped the power of pioneering science and innovation to discover and develop vital medicines,” said David Lacey, senior vice president, head of Research, Amgen. “That’s why Amgen is proud to sponsor the Amgen Tour of California in its fourth year and to continue the Breakaway from Cancer initiative as a vehicle to raise awareness of the comprehensive continuum of resources available to cancer patients and their caregivers – from prevention to education, patient care to advocacy and financial support.”

Amgen created the national Breakaway from Cancer™ initiative in 2005 as a complementary component to its sponsorship of the inaugural Amgen Tour of California. Through the Breakaway from Cancer initiative, Amgen strives to empower patients and their caregivers by connecting them to education, resources and hope.

Today’s activities featured cancer survivor Blaine Mauldin who fired the official start gun to begin the ride from Sausalito to Santa Cruz, and cancer survivor Karen Card had the honor of awarding Jacques-Maynes with Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer Most Courageous Rider Jersey.
